CHOOSING THE RIGHT CABINET MAKER
You just handed over the down payment and an uneasy feeling overtakes you as you watch your cabinet maker’s truck disappear down the street. Did we cover everything? Here are a few questions to ask beforehand that will help calm your nerves.
How long have you been doing this?
This is a fair question that most professionals will jump at the opportunity to answer. Beware of the transient tradesman that is in between handyman gigs and now wants to take a stab at cabinet making.
Do you have references?
A reputable company will look forward to having you talk to past customers. Why wouldn’t they?
Are you insured?
You will rest a little easier knowing that this issue has been clarified. Ask to see the insurance certificate. Anyone you hire to work on your home needs to carry the proper insurance...it's the law. If your potential cabinet maker cannot meet this basic requirement a red flag should go up.
How long is this going to take?
Good cabinets take time to make but an experienced cabinet maker should be able to give you a good idea of the length of time a project is going to take.
What materials will be used to build my cabinets?
Good materials and hardware are essential to a long lasting cabinet. Beware of the cabinet maker that sources his materials and hardware from the local home improvement center. Professional grade materials and hardware are seldom purchased from such locations.
Can I see a rendering of my cabinets before you start?
If this question causes a deer-in-the headlights look from your prospect you will know that they haven't embraced cabinet design software. A rendering is a 3 dimensional picture of you cabinets. It is extremely helpful for getting a good feel of what the finished product is going to look like.
